Hairstyle Definitions – Men
The variety of men’s hairstyles is not nearly as varied as women. Most men’s styles are created based on the length of hair a man would like to have – short, mid or long. Most men choose a short to mid length cut that they simply style by putting product in and sculpting to their liking. Messy styles are currently very popular though we are seeing more buzz cuts appear on celebrities both young and old.
Many long hairstyles for men are based on traditional women’s hairstyles. Men can wear long hair in pony tails or a wave. They can also create a shag style with mid-length hair.
There are some styles that are primarily considered for men. Below is a list of basic men’s hairstyles.
- Burr: hair is cut to 1/8 inch over the entire head
- Buzz cut: men’s hairstyle where the hair is cut very close to the scalp using an electric razor or clippers
- Caesar Cut: short haircut where the bangs are cut straight horizontally
- Crew Cut: hair is cut short on the sides and back with the top slightly longer but following the shape of the head
- Faux Hawk: spiky short haircut where the hair on top of the head is swept up and toward the center to create a triangular look
- Mullet: hairstyle where the hair is cut short in the front but allowed to hang long in the back
- Pompadour: a mid-length hair hairstyle created by combing the sides of the hair back and fanning the top of the hair forward and brushing it to a curl
- Scalp lock: a long lock of hair left on top of the shaven head; Native American origins
